Sedation Dentistry in Arlington, TX

Dental anxiety is a common problem for many patients, but it shouldn’t stop you from receiving the care you need. That’s why we offer several different sedation options to help put you at ease—nitrous oxide (laughing gas), oral sedation, and IV sedation. Each option is administered differently and offers different levels of sedation depending on your needs and the treatment being performed. When first discussing your sedation options, we will recommend what would be best.

01.

Preparing for Sedation

Depending on what sedation you receive, the preparation will be different:

For laughing gas, avoid heavy meals beforehand, and tell us about any medications you’re taking or health conditions. Wear comfortable clothing and arrive early to discuss any concerns. No special fasting is required, and you’ll typically be able to drive yourself home afterward.

For oral sedation and IV sedation, follow our instructions carefully. Don’t eat or drink for six to eight hours beforehand, take the prescribed medication as directed, wear comfortable clothing, and have someone drive you to and from the appointment. You should also tell us about all medications and health conditions to ensure safety.

02.

How Sedation Dentistry Works

Each sedation option will be administered differently:

For laughing gas, a small mask is placed over your nose. As you breathe normally, the gas is mixed with oxygen and inhaled. The effects happen within minutes, helping you feel calm and relaxed. When the mask is removed, the effects quickly wear off, so you can resume your normal activities shortly afterward.

For oral sedation, you take a prescribed medication around an hour before your treatment. The medication helps you relax, reduces anxiety, and induces drowsiness while keeping you conscious. Following your treatment, you will need someone to drive you home.

For IV sedation, medication is delivered into your bloodstream through a vein, typically in your arm or hand. It creates deep relaxation but allows you to still remain responsive. We monitor you throughout, ensuring a safe, calm, and stress-free dental experience. You’ll also need someone to drive you home with IV sedation as well.

FAQ

  • How long does sedation last?

Dental sedation can last anywhere from two to eight hours, depending on the type of sedation used:

    • Laughing gas wears off within minutes after removing the mask—most patients can resume normal activities immediately.
    • Oral sedation can last four to six hours or more; drowsiness can persist into the evening.
    • IV sedation can last four to eight hours, with some grogginess continuing for the rest of the day.
  • Is sedation dentistry safe?

Yes, sedation dentistry is generally safe when administered by a qualified dental professional. We carefully evaluate your medical history, current medications, and overall health to confirm sedation dentistry is right for you and help you choose the best option. As with any medical procedure, there are some risks—especially for those with certain health conditions—so it’s essential to disclose your full medical history beforehand.

  • Does insurance cover sedation dentistry?

Coverage of sedation depends on your insurance and specific benefits. Please check with your insurance carrier to confirm if sedation options are included in your plan.
